Transcending Boundaries
2015
Removing the Boundaries Between Artworks
The world is a complex continuum: nothing can exist independently, and there are no boundaries. However, human beings cannot comprehend this continuity. When people perceive the world, they do so by separating it into distinct parts through things like language and logic. People continue to divide the world every time they perceive it, creating boundaries in their consciousness that do not actually exist.
As people perceive the world by separating it into distinct parts, they feel as though these boundaries have always existed.
By eliminating the boundaries between artworks, the works can communicate with one another, influence each other and intermingle, while remaining independent. The artworks are continuous and without boundaries.
FEATURED WORKS
Flutter of Butterflies Beyond Borders
teamLab, 2015, Interactive Digital Installation, Endless
Flutter of Butterflies. When no one is in the Butterfly House space, it is completely dark and nothing exists. When people enter the space and stand still, butterflies emerge at their feet, or from their hands held against the wall. However, the butterflies that are born will die if people touch them. The butterflies cross the boundaries of other works, flying into the displays or out of the space and into other artworks. Then, when they enter another space they continue as a new artwork. The butterflies fly seamlessly between other works, blurring the boundaries between them.In the Borderless World, the butterflies are all created solely by the presence of people in the Butterfly House. If people destroy more butterflies than they create, this artwork will cease to exist. When the butterflies disappear, they no longer enter the other spaces, and the artworks of butterflies in each space no longer appear.
