Vortex Sea: Waves and Whirlpools

청해파문(靑海波文)은 일본의 전통적인 문양으로, “끝없이 펼쳐지는 잔잔한 파도의 문양에 넓은 바다가 베푸는 은혜에 대한 감사와, 영원히 이어지는 평화로운 삶에 대한 소망”이 담겨 있는 문양이다. 청해파문은 “사산 왕조 페르시아(226-651년)”에서 탄생한 문양이 실크로드를 통해 중국으로 전해졌고, 아스카 시대(飛鳥時代, 593-710년)에 일본에 전해졌다고 한다.

한편, 소용돌이 문양은 선사 시대 대부분의 민족들에게 사랑받았던 문양으로, 이토록 널리 전 세계에 퍼진 문양은 없다고 한다.

사람들은 파도를 옆에서 보는 모양을 그리고, 소용돌이는 위에서 내려다보는 모양을 그린다.

3차원적으로 다시 해석해, 구체에 소용돌이를 그리고, 자유롭게 회전하는 구체를 질서 있게 배열하여, 그 구체들의 소용돌이 집합을 ‘초주관적 공간(超主観空間)’으로 평면화해, 오른쪽 병풍(右隻)을 표현한다.

그리고 같은 구체를 무질서하게 배열한 뒤, 그 소용돌이 모임을 역시 ‘초주관적 공간(超主観空間)’으로 평면화해, 왼쪽 병풍(左隻)을 표현한다.
