Universe of Water Particles under Satellite’s Gravity

A 3-D model of space satellite ALOS-2 was created in a virtual 3-D space. In the computer environment, the satellite has a mass that creates gravity. The fall of water is calculated using physical laws and a waterfall is simulated that is attracted by the satellite’s gravity. The simulated waterfall is then projection-mapped onto a life-size model of satellite ALOS-2.

The water is expressed as a continuum of hundreds of thousands of water particles that flow in accordance with computer calculations of  particle interaction. The water particles that hit the satellite bounce off and circulate around the satellite until they evaporate.

Once an accurate water flow simulation has been constructed, 0.1% of the water particles are selected and lines are drawn in relation to them. The waterfall is expressed as the combination of these lines. Behind these lines exist thousands of water particles, and the curvature of the drawn lines  is based on their overall interaction.

The waterfall video artwork is created in 3-D space and uses what teamLab calls ultrasubjective space, the logical structure of spatial recognition used in premodern Japan.

Sefuri ILC High school!

From a request by Fukuoka Prefecture and Saga Prefecture with the aim of receiving an invitation for the particle physics research laboratory "ILC (International Linear Collider※1)," the promotional video produced by teamLab will be published on the Internet on video websites such as YouTube on April 19 th, 2013. "Sefuri ILC High School" is a promotional video for ILC (International Linear Collider) commissioned by Fukuoka Prefecture and Saga Prefecture. The materials used within the video, including the background music, are open to the public on the Internet as free material. Students of Saga Prefecture's Waseda High School explain the mechanics of the ILC in the massive particle physics research facility through a video in the style of a musical.
1：Current high school students explain the mechanics of particle physics through a musicalPersonifying the positrons and electrons that perform the collision experiments in the "ILC," they will explain how it all works in the style of a musical. When the electrons and positrons accelerate, the high school girls currently acting will be replaced by drawings in the academy drama's final collision.
2：A video fusing live action and animation
It appeals to various communities by using high-quality high-definition recordings of the beautiful scenery in Fukuoka and Saga prefectures, energetic high school girls, catchy melodies, and animation supported by high quality pictures.
3：The materials used are copyright free. Derivative works are welcome.
The materials used within the video, including the background music, are open to the public on the Internet as free material. We welcome the possibility that in the hands of different people, each creative effort will change the shape of this one video.
4：Participation by a diverse set of creators
Including Shota Mori who has attracted attention worldwide for the performance of the iPhone charger, various creators have participated in each part, from music, to choreography, to animation. Even though this work is less than 300 seconds and has had over an incredible amount 200 shots taken, it has incorporated the determination of the production team that have worked through scenes mere seconds long for extensive shots of scenes, costumes, props, motion graphics, animation, and more.

※1　 A massive experimental research facility for particle physics. The world's largest laboratory equipment for unraveling the mysteries of the universe. It reproduces the conditions immediately after the Big Bang when electrons and positrons were colliding near the speed of light. The "Sefuri Mountains" on the border of Fukuoka and Saga prefecture is a canidate site for construction.

Digital Waterfall Projected On A Satellite Gives The Illusion Of Weightlessness

Japanese studio teamLab is examining the beauty of outer space right here on Earth—more specifically in the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo. The exhibit, entitled Universe of Water Particles Under Satellite’s Gravity, consists of two parts: a giant model of the ALOS-2 satellite and a stunning projection-mapped waterfall rendered in ridiculous detail.teamLab constructed the physical ALOS-2 model to rest in the museum, but they also created a meticulous representation of the satellite in digital space, even down to the gravitational mass the satellite possesses. Once they had that rendered, the team stuck the satellite in a simulation of absolute zero gravity and added about one waterfall’s worth of H20 into their simulation. Their finely tuned physics engine calculates the rest, beautifully simulating how the water would cascade toward the satellite, since it’s the only source of gravity around. Back in the Museum of Contemporary art, the image of the waterfall is projected over the physical satellite, creating the wonderful illusion of weightlessness.The creators compare the effect to traditional Japanese painting, writing that, “In traditional Japanese painting, oceans, rivers and bodies of water are expressed as a curvilinear series of lines. These lines give the impression of life, as though water itself were a living creature.” All the same, if Katsushika Hokusai saw this thing, he’d probably wet himself on the spot.Universe of Water is the most recent in a teamLab series exploring aquatic aesthetic.
